Speeding up java server startup with something similar to Drip

Saw a tweet today about speeding up JRuny startup times with Drip (http://crashruby.com/2013/01/21/drip-with-jruby/ , https://github.com/flatland/drip).
It keeps a set of VMs running in the background with the correct class path etc ready to go and then starts the server when it is requested.
Wonder if this or the base idea can be adopted to speed up java server startup times.
