I could not find the documentation for packaging custom written cartridges into RPMs. How is it done? Do I write the spec file by hand? Where do the files go?

Hey Anselm, yes we do tend to write the spec files by hand but you have some good examples from which to start. I would recommend looking at the existing cartridges (https://github.com/openshift/origin-server/tree/master/cartridges) and find the technology fit closest to what you are doing. Then, check out the spec for that cartridge and see if it gives you a good starting point. For example, the PHP cartridge spec is here: https://github.com/openshift/origin-server/blob/master/cartridges/openshift-origin-cartridge-php/openshift-origin-cartridge-php.spec.

Side note, we do tend to use tito (https://github.com/dgoodwin/tito) for our development process to synchronize builds with our git repository. Not a necessity, but something that might help.
