If all you care about is creating a gear on a particular host and not doing any of the registration stuff that the broker does, you might be able to send the cartridge_do/app-create MCollective action to a single node by filtering on the node's identity.

There's no real facility for that, no. About the only hammer you have for app placement is region / profile.

I typically examine the output of oo-diagnostics. For automation (monitoring), oo-accept-node is more suitable.
